Predicting Demand on Lending Club Retail Platform from Loan Availability Data

Loan Supply and Demand Information for Lending Club Retail Platform

Since the events at Lending Club in early May (See Lending Club CEO Resigns After Internal Sale Review), there has been heightened interest in loan origination volumes at peer to peer lending platforms to gage the health of the platforms and industry. Since its IPO, Lending Club releases this information a few weeks after the end of each quarter. But in an attempt to gain an information edge, institutions, stock investors, analysts, and media have become more curious in predicting the demand trend based on publicly available information such as SEC filings and loan listings on the whole and fractional loan platforms.

We, at PeerCube, have been capturing and archiving data from both Lending Club and Prosper platforms over the 4 years. We most probably have the longest period data archived from both retail platforms. We often receive requests about the loan listing and demand trends at Lending Club and Prosper platforms. This post summarizes available resources at PeerCube for such future requests for information.

Twitter Feed and New Loan Alerts

In 2012, we started capturing the listing of new loans and total loans available on Lending Club and Prosper platforms. As there was not enough loan supply, our early users requested to be notified when new loans were being released. We set up a public @PeerCube Twitter feed that tweeted every time significant number of new loans were detected on platforms with the count of New Loans and Total Loans Available on the platform.

We minimize tweeting unrelated information such as industry news from this twitter handle. This enables feed subscribers to know just from @PeerCube notification that new loans were released. Also some may use this alert programmatically to initiate their own programs.

These tweets are also displayed as New Loan Alerts at PeerCube front page.

PeerCube Front Page

Along with New Loan Alert Tweets, at PeerCube front page, we also display detailed information about available loans on Lending Club and Prosper platforms. This is a good source of information for users who want to know if loans are available from their target Credit Grade.

Fractional Loan Listings

We provide past loan availability charts for Lending Club and Prosper Primary Fractional Loan Platform. In addition, we also provide historical loan funding trend for Lending Club Retail Platform.

A user can review new loans and average total loans hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly using these charts. The New Loans (Blue bars) indicate the new loans detected by PeerCube. The Average Total Loans (Orange line) indicate the number of available loans on platform, averaged over the time period displayed on the chart (for example, month). As shown in the charts, the monthly loan availability chart is much more relevant for the purpose of watching trend in monthly listings and origination volume.

Weekly Loan Funding Trend

We also provide historical weekly loan funding trend on Lending Club retail platform. This data is captured from the SEC filings submitted by Lending Club. Only recently, Lending Club has started to fund loans on its platform as shown by Red bars on the chart. There is steady decline in loan funded on retail platform since the events of early May.
